INTRODUCTION

In recent years, concern about climate change has increased, and big in cities this translates into the use of polluting transport. As a result of this concern, the use of personal mobility vehicles, and in particular electric scooters, has become popular as sustainable mobility alternatives in large cities. But at the same time, problems of coexistence with other individuals and vehicles on public roads are beginning to arise.

The Smart Scooter Etseib project was formed in November 2019 by a group of students and professors at the UPC-ETSEIB with the objective of developing technological systems that convert a conventional urban electric scooter to an intelligent one, in order to respond to the various problems that drivers encounter in the daily life of big cities.

The challenge was to overcome the challenges of the Smart Scooter Challenge, a university competition that consisted of testing the team's development in the following tests:

  1. Follow the line (running around 20-30 km/h)
    a. In a path 3 meters wide, 50 meters straight line, with 2 white lines 10 cm wide.
    b. Reduce to 10 km/h the max speed if out of the road

  2. Traffic light reaction
    a. Reduce to 0 km/h the max speed, when the Red or Yellow traffic light is correctly detected
    b. Able to accelerate when green to max speed

  3. Stop in front of a line of small (30cm) cones
    a. 4 small cones one beside the other perpendicular to reserved path
    b. Stop 5m before the cones when driving at 30 km/h
    c. Works similar as the Red or Yellow traffic light, and is a substitute of a real pedestrian or a blocking object.

  4. Reduce and keep at 5 km/h when cones 45cm
    a. Big cones, 45 cm high, disposed randomly but 1 meter between them
    b. Start reducing max speed to 5 km/h 10m before the first cone is detected

However, given the interest by the team on making scooter rides a more secure way to move around the cities, there have been more solutions developed. This solutions are explained here.
